Historia
Elizabeth is a demure 23-year-old wiling her life away at a dull museum job, living with her neurotic aunt, and subsisting off her dead mother’s inheritance. When Elizabeth begins to suffer terrible migraines and backaches, her aunt takes her to the doctor, then to a psychiatrist. But slowly, and with Jackson’s characteristic chill, we learn that Elizabeth is not just one girl - but four separate, self-destructive personalities.

Seventeen-year-old Natalie Waite longs to escape home for college. Her father is a domineering and egotistical writer who keeps a tight rein on Natalie and her long-suffering mother. When Natalie finally does get away, however, college life doesn’t bring the happiness she expected. Little by little, Natalie is no longer certain of anything - even where reality ends and her dark imaginings begin. Chilling and suspenseful, Hangsaman is loosely based on the real-life disappearance of a Bennington College sophomore in 1946.

Little Marek, the abused and delusional son of the village shepherd, believes his mother died giving birth to him. One of Marek’s few consolations is his enduring bond with the blind village midwife, Ina, who suckled him when he was a baby. For some people, Ina’s ability to receive transmissions of sacred knowledge from the natural world is a godsend. For others, Ina’s home in the woods is a godless place.

Written by one of the greatest Iranian writers of the twentieth century, Blind Owl tells a two-part story of an isolated narrator with a fragile relationship with time and reality. In first person, the narrator offers a string of hazy, dreamlike recollections fueled by opium and alcohol. He spends time painting the exact same scene on the covers of pen cases: an old man wearing a cape and turban sitting under a cypress tree, separated by a small stream from a beautiful woman in black who offers him a water lily.

Twenty-five years ago, Maggie Holt and her parents, Ewan and Jess, moved into Baneberry Hall, a rambling Victorian estate in the Vermont woods. Three weeks later they fled in the dead of night, an ordeal Ewan later recounted in a nonfiction book called House of Horrors. His horror memoir of ghostly happenings and encounters with malevolent spirits became a worldwide phenomenon, rivaling The Amityville Horror in popularity — and skepticism.

Acclaimed in her own time for her short story “The Lottery” and her novel The Haunting of Hill House - classics ranking with the work of Edgar Allan Poe - Shirley Jackson blazed a path for contemporary writers with her explorations of evil, madness, and cruelty. Soon after her untimely death in 1965, Jackson’s children discovered a treasure trove of previously unpublished and uncollected stories, many of which are brought together in this remarkable collection.

Libby Day was seven when her mother and two sisters were murdered in "The Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas". As her family lay dying, little Libby fled their tiny farmhouse into the freezing January snow. She lost some fingers and toes, but she survived, and famously testified that her 15-year-old brother, Ben, was the killer. Resumen del Editor
Shirley Jackson’s deliciously unsettling novel about a perverse, isolated, and possibly murderous family takes readers deep into a labyrinth of dark neurosis, macabre humor, and gothic atmosphere.
Six years after four family members died suspiciously of arsenic poisoning, the three remaining Blackwoods—elder, agoraphobic sister Constance; wheelchair-bound Uncle Julian; and eighteen-year-old Mary Katherine, or, Merricat—live together in pleasant isolation. Merricat has developed an idiosyncratic system of rules and protective magic to guard the estate against intrusions from hostile villagers. But one day a stranger arrives—cousin Charles, with his eye on the Blackwood fortune—and manages to penetrate into their carefully shielded lives. Unable to drive him away by either polite or occult means, Merricat adopts more desperate methods, resulting in crisis, tragedy, and the revelation of a terrible secret.
Jackson’s novel emerges less as a study in eccentricity and more—like some of her other fictions—as a powerful critique of the anxious, ruthless processes involved in the maintenance of normalcy itself.

Editor's Pick
"When I first listened to this classic last year, I truly couldn’t believe that I had gone so long without it in my life. With its atmospheric prose, mysterious characters, and a slow revealing plot that's haunting in the purest sense of the word, We Have Always Lived in the Castle has quickly found its way onto my list of top 10 favorite novels (and listens—Bernadette Dunne's performance brilliantly evokes Jackson's melancholy, ominous tone)."

In this coming of age story, Dodie Smith introduces the visionary and eccentric character of seventeen-year-old Cassandra Mortmain. Historia
For the past twenty-five years, Margaret Atwood has written works of striking originality and imagination. In The Blind Assassin, she stretches the limits of her accomplishments as never before, creating a novel that is entertaining and profoundly serious. The novel opens with these simple, resonant words: "Ten days after the war ended, my sister drove a car off the bridge." They are spoken by Iris, whose terse account of her sister Laura's death in 1945 is followed by an inquest report proclaiming the death accidental.

Montserrat has always been overlooked. She’s a talented sound editor, but she’s left out of the boys’ club running the film industry in ’90s Mexico City. And she’s all but invisible to her best friend, Tristán, a charming if faded soap opera star, though she’s been in love with him since childhood. Then Tristán discovers his new neighbor is the cult horror director Abel Urueta, and the legendary auteur claims he can change their lives—even if his tale of a Nazi occultist imbuing magic into highly volatile silver nitrate stock sounds like sheer fantasy.

Creepy and beautiful
It is not at all the horror story I thought it was. It is a creepy, affectionate and beautiful story of insanity, loneliness and hatred. Merricat is one of the most fascinating literary characters I've met. It's very hard not to like her and feel sorry for her and at the same time there is an uncanny feeling about her. A must read!

A bizarre and quirky rendition of a child's/woman's? daydreams and her outlook on reality. Her mind is definitely unstable and her sister isn't altogether there either, but they care for each other deeply and the cruelties of the strangers seem unfair. This story has an eerie quality to it, but it's all presented in a light, delusional atmosphere that doesn't really help with the creepy factor. You find yourself almost agreeing with some of the thoughts the main character has throughout the book. But, like I said, bizarre. I feel like there are a few questions the author purposefully didn't answer in the book, to keep the reading either guessing or formulating their own thoughts, but it would be awesome to have an "extra" section that explains some of the behavior and thoughts of the characters.

Ms. Jackson proves her worth
Simultaneously puzzled, intrigued, delighted, and mildly repulsed by these characters. Highly recommend, especially to those who love psychological mysteries and who enjoy a bit of magical realism. Great stuff!

Superb story
The author clearly (to me) is manipulating readers emotionally with open glee in this macabre story! Is someone actually guilty of a crime, or not? It takes awhile before the listener is sure. With whom should our sympathies lie? Is an inborn feral nature automatically evil? (We had a neighborhood cat with a pronounced sweet nature; nonetheless, I also saw him slaughter many birds and mice! I fed him often with tidbits of fried chicken....)
Of course, small town natives are infamous for their aroused feral natures whenever a resident is 'different'. Do two wrongs....etc etc etc.
Narration is excellent. This book is a good listen.

Shirley Jackson is a genius!
Such a strange, unique story. Merricat’s head is a simultaneously wonderful and unsettling place to be! I loved this story. It’s great to analyze, too – Merricat’s struggle for power, control over her home and herself, and the lengths she goes to in order to acquire it - it’s intriguing. Bernadette Dunne also did a lovely job of narrating. I definitely recommend it.

An Unsettling Story
A good psychological horror story of two sisters living in isolation and fear. The plot slowly unfolds as we find out the circumstances of their lives. There is an aura of impending doom that hangs over the narrative as we listen and untangle this back story. The novel is narrated by Mary Katherine who is paranoid and lives in a fantasy world where she thinks magic can protect her and her sister Constance. This book leaves the listener with a spine-chilling reaction.
Bernadette Dunn's reading is perfect - her voice has an undertone of fear and barely surpressed panic.
