Story
Between 2013 and 2022, Tony Abbott begat Malcolm Turnbull, who begat Scott Morrison. For nine long years, Australia was governed by a succession of Coalition governments rocked by instability and bloodletting, and consumed with prosecuting climate and culture wars while neglecting policy. By the end, among his detractors—and there were plenty—Morrison was seen as the worst prime minister since Billy McMahon. Morrison failed to accept the mantle of national leadership, or to deal adequately with the challenges of natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Story
Ned West dreams of sailing across the river on a boat of his very own. To Ned, a boat means freedom–the fresh open water, squid-rich reefs, fires on private beaches–a far cry from life on Limberlost, the family farm, where his father worries and grieves for Ned's older brothers. They're away fighting in a ruthless and distant war, becoming men on the battlefield, while Ned–too young to enlist–roams the land in search of rabbits to shoot, selling their pelts to fund his secret boat ambitions. But as the seasons pass and Ned grows up, real life gets in the way.

Story
It is the summer of 1979. An English painter travels to a small island off the west coast of Ireland. Mr. Lloyd takes the last leg by curragh, though boats with engines are available and he doesn't much like the sea. He wants the authentic experience, to be changed. He doesn't know that a Frenchman follows close behind. Masson has visited the island for many years, studying their language, and is fiercely protective of their isolation. But the people who live on this rock have their own views on what is being recorded, what is being taken, and what ought to be given in return.

The suspense

Publisher's summary
John Clare was a titan in Australian politics. The head of a powerful union and a key player in the election of Kevin Rudd as prime minister in 2007, he had long been tipped as a future leader himself. Supporting him in his push for power were his elegant wife, Grace, his troubled children, Sophie and Toby, and Tessa, the mistress he thought would stay secret.
But now John has fallen, brutally, to his death. A terrible accident - or was it?
In the wake of losing John, his inner circle mourn and rage, remembering and trying to forget the many ways he'd loved and disappointed them. An adoring and unreliable father, a grateful and selfish husband, a besotted and absent lover, an authoritative and compassionate leader, a failed politician in an era when party politics failed a nation. As those around him reassess everything they knew of and felt for John, a new idea of what love and power really mean begins to emerge - as does the true cause of his death.
Gripping, propulsive and ambitious, A Great Hope untangles the mystery of John's fall through the eyes of those who knew him best - or thought they did. Deftly displaying the clash of the political and the personal, this is a novel for our times, from a brilliant and forceful new Australian writer.
Critic reviews
"Just pages into this book, I felt the electric jolt that accompanies the discovery of a serious new talent. A Great Hope is a genuine literary page-turner that satisfies until the last paragraph." (Annabel Crabb)
"A Great Hope is written written in an addictive prose that keeps the reader firmly in its grip." (Books+Publishing)

Put This Author in your Little Black Book
Witty, clever, funny, intelligent and sad. The mystery is not classic but what a journey this book is from start to finish. Loved the smart mouthing Sophie. You could base a series on this character. The narrator did a top job and is perfectly suited to capturing the full range of emotions in this book.
