Publisher's summary

Battle: The Story of the Bulge, John Toland's first work of military history, recounts the saga of beleaguered American troops as they resisted Hitler's deadly counter offensive in World War II's Battle of the Bulge - and turned it into an Allied victory. It is a gripping work, painstakingly researched and imbued with such vivid detail that listeners will feel as though they themselves witnessed these events. This is a book not to be missed by anyone interested in this tumultuous era of our world's history.

Top notch

This nonfiction account is told in a very entertaining way & the reader is as good as their is.
About the 126 captives executed my understanding is they were from a African American regiment & if so it should have been noted along with the fact that for many years after WW1 the French brought in Black Africans from their African colony & allowed them to Rape German women in occupied west Germany without consequence.
The Battle is a fair account with this one exception however still 5 stars.

The Battle of the Bulge

long has the story's of the Bulge been told and movies have been made recalling this historic battle, but the telling of this epic battle will take you through eye whiteness accounts and of the individual memoirs that have been recounted and told as remembered. the telling of this story is a riveting account of history if it was a book you could not put it down for it would be a page turner. Great narration, Great story a must listening for any historical buff.

An Important History

Great tribute to the American soldier and our military leadership. It illustrates why this is rightly acknowledged as the Greatest Generation.

Enjoyed the depth.

The many personal stories made this relatable. Also presented Patton as a much more humane person who really cared for his men.

Second Read

This was my second exposure to this book. The first time was probably about 8 or 10 years ago when I read a hard copy, which was also my first exposure to John Toland. I have since read or listened to several books by John Toland and now he is one of my favorite authors of history books, and Battle is no exception to his record of quality historical work. This story of the Battle of the Bulge, though somewhat scattered, gives the reader perspectives from all sides on the strategic, tactical and personal levels. Battle is a historical record, an engaging story and a healthy reminder of what combat troops do to serve their countries.

I Wish I Had An Interactive Map!!

what a great story about this incredible battle in late 1944 and early 1945. The interweaving of dozens of stories, the gritty details and factual commentary are exactly the kind of thing that make a great WWII novel, great! I only wish I was able to look at an interactive map while audible was playing.

SO WELL DONE!

This book read like a novel. John Toland interviewed as many survivor's of the Battle of the Buldge as he could find. The conversations were quoted from what these men said. History came alive through this book.

The last BIG American battle

The Battle of the Bulge was America's last big battle. The big battles of the Pacific theater were already over, and after the Bulge it was just a massive chase of a defeated, retreating German army. Korea saw some smaller theater - scale battles, but Vietnam, Iraq & Afghanistan were guerilla wars. I found myself almost nostalgic reading this history and knowing the combatants are nearly dead to history. I enjoyed the factual elements of the story, and how it was personalized with the quoted and paraphrased stories of real people who experienced it. I highly recommend searching Google Images for a battle map so you can better visualize the constant troop movements.
