Die tief reichende Freundschaft, in welcher die zwei bekanntesten Dichterfürsten aus deutschsprachigen Landen miteinander verbunden waren, begann laut einigen Quellen alles andere als günstig, da beim ersten Treffen der beiden Goethe Schiller weder erkannte noch diesem irgendwelche Beachtung schenkte. Das änderte sich mit der Zeit, nachdem sich Goethe näher über Schillers Werk informierte und beide in regen Gedankenaustausch traten, besonders in vorliegender Briefwechsel-Reihe. Nicht nur, dass man über diverse Texte aus eigener und fremder Feder, philosophische und literarische Spitzfindigkeiten, Bühnenstücke, Autoren, Verleger, Freunde und Bekannte diskutierte, man lud sich zu besonderen Anlässen auch gegenseitig ein, um voneinander zu profitieren im zwischenmenschlichen wie beruflichen Sinne. Dabei ist dem deutlich jüngeren Schiller der Respekt gegenüber dem zweitwichtigsten Mann im Staate anzumerken, nichtsdestotrotz muss er nicht lange bitten, um Goethe von einer Zusammenarbeit bei einer von ihm gegründeten Literatur-Zeitschrift zu überzeugen, die vom Verleger Cotta finanziert wurde und für welche auch andere prominente Autoren Texte verfassten. Das Verhältnis beider Hauptprotagonisten zueinander ist deswegen so faszinierend und interessant, weil Schiller als der größere Dramatiker und Theoretiker auf den größeren Epiker und in der Praxis weit erfahreneren Künstler Goethe trifft, wobei die Unterschiede besonders in der Lyrik beider klar zum Vorschein kommen. Während man für das Verständnis von vielen Gedichten bei Schiller im Prinzip umfangreiche Kenntnis der kompletten griechischen Mythologie voraussetzt ist das bei Goethe nicht notwendig, da dessen Gedichte überwiegend auf Themen aus dem Alltag zurückgreifen und sich dadurch dessen größere Lebenserfahrung widerspiegelt. Trotzdem bleibt es natürlich dem Empfinden jedes Einzelnen überlassen, was einen mehr anspricht, denn über Geschmack lässt sich ja bekanntlich nicht streiten. Es sei wie es sei – Spaß machen die zwei allemal. Des Briefwechsels zwischen Goethe und Schiller zwölfter Teil.
