"I'm going down now", I said to a young woman a few seconds before the darkness-my first cardiac arrest. As I returned to work as a behavioral coach, it became maddening to hear about all-consuming, everyday problems and misguided priorities while I fought to merely remain conscious. The Half-Known Life challenges conventional thinking of success, identity, and personal change. Most often, truly profound change happens following events that shake someone to their core-a car accident, death of a family member, or cardiac arrest that pulls them into a moment of clarity.

Intuitive eating is a new way of life. It doesn’t begin with a list of rules, restrictions, and guides to follow. Nor does it require you to stock up on a new group of supplements, specific food items, or "lose weight quick" guides. The psychological impact of intuitive eating is powerful. It aims to remove the barriers of foods you eat versus foods you are not permitted to have and puts the decision-making in your mind and body.

Don’t allow binge eating to control your life: The key to food freedom may not be what you think. We all occasionally overeat an extra helping of dessert or a second serving of a holiday meal, but there is a difference between overeating and binge eating. People who struggle with binge eating often consume large quantities of food to the point of feeling overly full, eat a lot without feeling hungry, feel a lack of control, and they become trapped by cycles of bingeing that undermine their health and weight loss goals.

Are you in a lifelong battle with diets? Are you overeating during periods of stress? This audiobook will guide you through a holistic approach that has nothing to do with diets. Intuitive eating teaches you to establish a deep connection with your body on the assumption that the body has its own intelligence and knows when and how to eat. Its primary purpose is not to lose weight, what matters is not seeing the pounds on the scale, but feeling better, healthier, and full of energy.

It’s not just you. Stress levels are at an all-time high—so much so that a recently convened panel of medical experts in the US has recommended that all adults under the age of 65 be screened for anxiety. In How to Release Anxiety, Gabby Bernstein offers simple, actionable steps for feeling better, living with more ease, and showing up for those around us. Gabby’s unusual advice: Rather than manage your anxiety, what if you befriended it? Gabby posits that what we befriend, we can ultimately be at ease with. So she invites us to get curious.

The guests range from super celebs (Jamie Foxx, Arnold Schwarzenegger, etc.) and athletes (icons of powerlifting, gymnastics, surfing, etc.) to legendary Special Operations commanders and black-market biochemists. For most of my guests, it’s the first time they’ve agreed to a two-to-three-hour interview.

Honest review
So, I bought this book after observing this significant changes in my son's teacher. When I inquired, she told me that her journey began when she was introduced to this book. I thought what harm could it do. I purchased this book for myself and I must say I couldn't be happier. I have read quite a few books and compulsive emotional eating however this one is by far my favorite. Highly recommend for anyone struggling

Decent Advice for Healthy Eating
This is another application of Dialectic Behavior Therapy (DBT) applied to counter emotional eating and the associated health issues. DBT is adapted from Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) that has been found useful in treating emotion based behaviors through talking … with the dialectic presumably using opposing ideas. In that respect, it was not obvious to me how this fits in the DBT treatment arena. Like the previous book, Huang combines personal anecdotes to illustrate the concepts presented in the book, which, while helpful, don’t seem to be that revolutionary or particularly surprising. However, this was good advice and well organized, with an accompanying pdf to help put these ideas into practice. The narration was good for the material as presented and was easy to listen to and stay focused, but was not exceptional.
The chapters and sections in this work are:
Introduction (9:51)
Ch. 1: Understanding Emotional Eating (22:21)
Ch. 2: Dialectic Behavior 101 (11:22)
Ch. 3: Mindfulness Skills for Emotional Eating (17:53)
Ch. 4: Distress Tolerance Skills for Emotional Eating (12:22)
Ch. 5: Emotion-Regulating Skills for Emotional Eating (27:55)
Ch. 6: Interpersonal Effectiveness Skills for Emotional (19:08)
Ch. 7: Developing Healthy Habits (24:08)
Ch. 8: Building a Support System (90:53)
Ch. 9. Dealing with Setbacks and Relapses (8:34)
Ch. 10. Maintaining Long-Term Success (11:22)

Great resource
Just finished this insightful audiobook on overcoming emotional eating, and it's been a game-changer for me. Barrett Huang's approach to tackling food addiction through Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is both practical and compassionate. The personal anecdotes and worksheets make the journey feel personal and achievable.
What I found most helpful were the clear distinctions between different types of overeating and the underlying emotional triggers. The DBT strategies for managing these emotions and developing a healthier relationship with food are laid out in an easy-to-understand and apply manner. This book isn't just about changing eating habits; it's about understanding and managing the emotions that drive them.
The section on mindfulness and stress management was particularly enlightening. It helped me to see the connection between my emotional states and my eating patterns. The actionable worksheets are a great tool for self-reflection and tracking progress.
The narration of the audiobook makes the content easily digestible and engaging, perfect for listening on the go. The advice is heartfelt and relatable, making you feel like you're not alone in this struggle. This book is suitable for all ages, making it a valuable resource for anyone looking to understand and overcome emotional eating.
If you're struggling with emotional eating or looking to improve your relationship with food, this audiobook is a must-listen. Barrett Huang offers not just a pathway to healthier eating habits but a journey towards emotional well-being and self-acceptance. Highly recommended for its practical advice, emotional depth, and easy-to-implement strategies.

Solid advice
This audiobook is well narrated and has lots of good information about how we get into emotional eating habits, trying to change how we feel with food. It delves into some root causes and where this initiates from. I did find quite a lot of this common sense and what to me is fairly obvious information, however that might be a little harsh when I guess all corners need to be covered. Nevertheless, this audiobook does gradually guide you into getting deeply honest with yourself and identifying and changing those patterns of feeling bad and using food as a weapon.
