Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. Publisher's summary
One of Real Simple's Best Books of 2018
Liam Jones was the love of Juliet’s life. He was her brother’s best friend, then her best friend, then the father of her little boy. In those shining weeks after Zac was born, she had never been happier, and neither had Liam.
And then one night, Liam disappeared without a trace.
Ten-year-old Zac Hutchinson collects facts: octopuses have three hearts, Usain Bolt is the fastest man on earth. But no one will tell him what happened to his father and where he went.
When Juliet inadvertently admits that his father is the only man she's ever loved, Zac decides he is going to find him and deliver his mom the happily ever after she deserves. But Liam left for a reason, and as Zac searches for clues of his father, Juliet begins to rebuild what shattered so many years ago.
An unforgettable, heart-stopping story of the secrets we keep and of love in all of its many forms.
Critic reviews
One of PureWow’s Best Beach Reads of Summer 2018
"Little Big Love introduces us to a little boy with a big heart. It’s a story of love and loss, secrets and lies, but ultimately, it’s a celebration of the healing power of forgiveness and grace. Funny and wise, heartbreaking and uplifting, this novel is one to cherish. Keep the tissues handy.” (Susan Wiggs, number-one New York Times best-selling author)
"Delightful, heart-wrenching, poignant, and absolutely real, Katy Regan has created a uniquely brave and beautiful voice. She writes with tremendous acuity and tenderness, with a story that you will not be able to stop reading." (Jane Green, New York Times best-selling author of The Sunshine Sisters)
"Beautifully written and brimming with people to love and root for, Little Big Love had me from the first page. Zac's voice is arresting, compelling and completely original - I absolutely loved this book!" (Lisa Jewell, New York Times best-selling author)

The death of legendary jazz trumpeter Joss Moody exposes an extraordinary secret. Unbeknown to all but his wife Millie, Joss was a woman living as a man. The discovery is most devastating for their adopted son, Colman, whose bewildered fury brings the press to the doorstep and sends his grieving mother to the sanctuary of a remote Scottish village. Winner of the Guardian Fiction Prize, Trumpet by Jackie Kay is a starkly beautiful modern classic about the lengths to which people will go for love.

It is 1940. France has fallen, and only a narrow strip of sea lies between Great Britain and invasion. The war could go either way, and everyone must do their bit. Young copywriter Catrin Cole is drafted into the Ministry of Information to help write women into propaganda films - something that the men aren't very good at. She is quickly seconded to the ministry's latest endeavor: a heartwarming tale of bravery and rescue at Dunkirk. It's all completely fabricated, of course, but what does that matter when the nation's morale is at stake?

Narration is good...
But this sad story goes on and on with too much depressing and mundane dysfunction. More of an exploration of grief than I had expected from the title and reviews.
