Story
John Wayne Cleaver is dangerous, and he knows it. He's obsessed with serial killers, but really doesn't want to become one. So for his own sake, and the safety of those around him, he lives by rigid rules he's written for himself, practicing normal life as if it were a private religion that could save him from damnation. Dead bodies are normal to John. They don't demand or expect the empathy he's unable to offer. Perhaps that's what gives him the objectivity to recognize that there's something different about the body the police have just found behind the Wash-n-Dry Laundromat - and to appreciate what that difference means.

Story
The human race is all but extinct after a war with Partials - engineered organic beings identical to humans - has decimated the population. Reduced to only tens of thousands by RM, a weaponized virus to which only a fraction of humanity is immune, the survivors in North America have huddled together on Long Island while the Partials have mysteriously retreated. The threat of the Partials is still imminent, but, worse, no baby has been born immune to RM in more than a decade. Our time is running out.

Story
From Dan Wells, author of the New York Times best-selling Partials Sequence, comes the first book in a new sci-fi-noir series. Los Angeles in 2050 is a city of open doors, as long as you have the right connections. That connection is a djinni - a smart device implanted right in a person's head. In a world where virtually everyone is online 24 hours a day, this connection is like oxygen - and a world like that presents plenty of opportunities for someone who knows how to manipulate it.

A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

Publisher's summary
I killed a demon. I don't know if it was really technically a demon, but I do know that it was some kind of monster, with fangs and claws and the whole bit, and he killed a lot of people. So I killed him. I think it was the right thing to do. At least the killing stopped.
Well, it stopped for a while.
In I Am Not a Serial Killer, John Wayne Cleaver saved his town from a murderer even more appalling than the serial killers he obsessively studies, using his own repressed homicidal proclivities to even the odds.
But it turns out even demons have friends, and the disappearance of one has brought another to Clayton County. Soon there are new victims for John to work on at the mortuary, and a new mystery to solve. But this time something's different. John has tasted death, and the dark nature he used as a weapon - the terrifying persona he calls "Mr. Monster" - might now be using him.
No one in Clayton is safe unless John can vanquish two nightmarish adversaries: the unknown demon he must hunt, and the inner demon he can never escape.

The living dead are more alive than ever! Zombies have become more than an iconic monster for the 21st century: They are now a phenomenon constantly revealing as much about ourselves - and our fascination with death, resurrection, and survival - as our love for the supernatural or post-apocalyptic speculation. Our most imaginative literary minds have been devoured by these incredible creatures and produced exciting, insightful, and unflinching new works of zombie fiction.

Lyra's story begins in the Haven Institute, a building tucked away on a private island off the coast of Florida that from a distance looks serene and even beautiful. But up close, the locked doors, military guards, and biohazard suits tell a different story. In truth Haven is a clandestine research facility where thousands of replicas, or human models, are born, raised, and observed. When a surprise attack is launched on Haven, two of its young experimental subjects - Lyra, or 24, and the boy known only as 72 - manage to escape.

Story
When John Rechy's explosive first novel appeared in 1963, it marked a radical departure in fiction, and gave voice to a subculture that had never before been revealed with such acuity. It earned comparisons to Genet and Kerouac, even as Rechy was personally attacked by scandalized reviewers. Nevertheless, the book became an international best seller, and 50 years later, it has become a classic. Bold and inventive in style, Rechy is unflinching in his portrayal of one hustling "youngman" and his search for self-knowledge.

Thrilling and Horrifying
The first book "I am not a serial killer" was good, but in this book "Mr. Monster" both the writing intensifies and perfects, and John Wayne Cleaver the character comes into his own, and we start to get a handle on him, and possibly (gasp) actually begin to LIKE him. He's a guy, a dude, a teenager pretty much like any other kid, except that today he would probably be labeled as "on the spectrum" (and this is the best depiction in fiction I've ever come across of ASD, bar none). But aside from John, everything else is wonderfully creepy and downright scary, as we are allowed to visit a place much scarier than any gruesome imagining of Dracula's lair. The basement and the pit will give you nightmares, all the while you get to learn all about love and what it actually is! Not a bad deal. I haven't read the third book yet but have it in my library, and figure John will grow and develop even as Dan Well's genius creative expression expands, so I'm hooked, this is good stuff Maynard, good stuff. Whoa!!!!
This series is SO GOOD! And Kirby is one of the BEST narrators ever! I have NEVER heard a narrator put as much emotion and energy into a book as Kirby does. He really brings the book to life.
Dan Wells is a genius and I can't wait to see what John Wayne Cleaver does next!

Look, great story. Really good series. But...
Trigger warning, he kills a cat. They only go into light detail, but personally I still hate that sort if stuff with a passion. The only pass they get with it is that there was a purpose to it. It was showing his state of mind. If it is something you cant stand, i just recommend skipping that part. I will edit my review with the exact time frame to skip. The only reason i kept listening is because it really is good otherwise.

A great sequal to the first book!
I enjoyed this story very much. The characters are very interesting and feel real.
John Clever is one messed up dude, but Dan Wells has a great way of showing how John deals with his internal monster.
A slight set back would be the loud yelling in the narration. It got on my nerves a little. Even then, I thought Kirby Heyborne did a great job.

What crazy fun!
SPOILERS!
This book and the first book in the series are really fun reads. I didn’t know what to expect except that I knew the story was a thriller with a super natural spin and that a demon was involved, so it was surprising. I found myself cringing, wincing, smiling, laughing, and gasping the whole way through. Dan, great job! I particularly enjoyed the sinking gut feeling I got when I thought he’d give in to Mr. Monster and then the utter elation (brought me to tears a wee bit) when at the end he defined being a real hero and did what was right. Great struggle!
Kirby, audio was spot on. Wonderful performance. Super impressed. Not an easy book to read aloud. Phew! Great job!
I love your writing, Dan Wells. Now, on to part three.

Great story, good narrator, volume control needed
Good follow-up story to the first one. A few times it got a bit too focused on the desire to mutilate and kill and made me squirm and I’m not usually squirmish. So listener beware. I loved the narrator, until he screamed in his mic, over and over. I know the book says they hell or scream but he didn’t have to actually do it! I found myself grabbing for the volume button several times I’m order to save my hearing. I hope he narrates more books since I found his voice very pleasant and he did a great job with characters and accents. I know he was a movie actor before so maybe he thinks that’s how books should be narrated as well?
