Stunning Historical Novel

Anyone interested in jazz, Hawaii, subtleties of race relations, or women’s rights will really appreciate this treasure of a book. I listened to a library copy of this book when it first came out. I was working my way through an onslaught of major life difficulties. This beautiful story somehow reassured me that I would survive and be healthy and happy again eventually. And so it turned out. The narrator's voice is rich. She gets the Hawaiian pidgeon talk perfectly. And with her reading them, the Hawaiian words at the beginning of each chapter are pure poetry.

The last hour is an interview with the author. Not to be missed! She spent five years researching for the book. She even learned to play the trumpet! Her use of words, especially descriptions of music, is remarkable. The story goes all over the world and covers generations of several families. It is a smooth listen, though painful in places. We care about every one of the interesting and colorful characters. If you love history (Hawaii or jazz), you'll be at home with this book. The main characters are based on people who actually lived. Well worthwhile!

Another brilliant masterpiece

Kiana's writing continues to blow me away. She goes to those dark places, but brings truth and dignity to them. I'll always admire her ability to do that along with excellent storytelling in general.
