Resumen del Editor

"A first-rate political thriller."–John Grisham, #1 New York Times bestselling author

The hugely anticipated new Penn Cage novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Natchez Burning trilogy and Cemetery Road, about a man—and a town—rocked by anarchy and tragedy, but unbowed in the fight to save those they love

Fifteen years after the events of the Natchez Burning trilogy, Penn Cage is alone. Nearly all his loved ones are dead, his old allies gone, and he carries a mortal secret that separates him from the world. But Penn’s exile comes to an end when a brawl at a Mississippi rap festival triggers a bloody mass shooting—one that nearly takes the life of his daughter Annie.

As the stunned cities of Natchez and Bienville reel, antebellum plantation homes continue to burn and the deadly attacks are claimed by a Black radical group as historic acts of justice. Panic sweeps through the tourist communities, driving them inexorably toward a race war.

But what might have been only a regional sideshow of the 2024 Presidential election explodes into national prominence, thanks to the stunning ascent of Robert E. Lee White, a Southern war hero who seizes the public imagination as a third-party candidate. Dubbed “the Tik-Tok Man,” and funded by an eccentric Mississippi billionaire, Bobby White rides the glory of his Special Forces record to an unprecedented run at the White House—one unseen since the campaign of H. Ross Perot.

To triumph over the national party machines, Bobby evolves a plan of unimaginable daring. One fateful autumn weekend, with White set to declare his candidacy in all fifty states, the forces polarizing America line up against one another: Black vs. white, states vs. the federal government, democracy vs. Fascism. Teaming with his fearless daughter (now a civil rights lawyer) and a former Black Panther who spent most of his life in Parchman Prison, Penn tears into Bobby White’s pursuit of the Presidency and ultimately risks a second Civil War to try to expose its motivation to the world, before the America of our Constitution slides into the abyss.

In Southern Man, Greg Iles returns to the riveting style and historic depth that made the Natchez Burning trilogy a searing masterpiece and hurls the narrative fifteen years forward into our current moment—where America itself teeters on the brink of anarchy.

Epic

Iles gifted us fans of Penn Cage a (likely) final glimpse of the Cage family while illuminating past and current evils. The action was phenomenal. The book was long and at times tedious. It could have been divided into two or three books. His characters remain complex. He let us visit old friends from previous Cage and other books. Greg Iles continues to leave his mark on modern well written fiction. He surprised me again. This reader is well read and well educated and he still blew my mind with insights into conflicts. I will enjoy reading this one again.

Too much going on at once.

Love Pen Cage novels but this one has way too much going. It could have been 2 books easily. I like that the author portrayed Pen as a vulnerable older character, however, to me it felt like his health condition was not necessary for the story or at least not how it developed.
I like the historic angle and as always I like how he has no problems in showing how even now in the 21st century narrow minded people holds on to archaic prejudices in regards of race. Some characters names are a bit confusing because they are the same as some who have passed. You definitely need to be fully awake.
Intricate story, many twists, and overall not so far to a near future true if society keeps clinging to ancient beliefs. Good read.

Audio book not great

I am returning the audio, but have purchased the book. The audio was driving me crazy. It was like a broadcaster with headlines . Could not tell who was talking. Hard to follow because I felt annoyed and like I was being yelled at. With that said I love this author one of my all time favorite. Reading the book is working much better.

Disappointed

I have read every novel written by this author as he my favorite. Reading is my favorite hobby and I enjoy a good story that allows me to "escape" from what's going on in the world. Several authors have recently written about pandemics, riots, politics, so I'm guessing there's a market for it. After 9 hours, I have, sadly, decided to discontinue this novel.

Lacks Even Remote Plausibility

There is no way I am going to listen to one impossible traumatic scenario after another, for 45-hours, hoping Greg Iles will finally take his foot of the race-war gas pedal. This book is so filled with hot-button race tropes that it becomes cartoonish within a few hours. Furthermore, every main character is so annoying, so utterly silly and unbelievable, I found myself wondering if this novel was some sort of pre-release, unedited, sample mistakenly released for audience feedback. If it was, here is my advice to all my fellow listeners:

Do not purchase this unserious race-war pulp fiction. It is a screed unworthy to be a sequel to Greg Iles other fine novels. Even Scott Brick's voice strains to make the characters believable!

Same old topics

An hour in and it just alternates between racial conflict and political agendas. Isles needs to think of some new plot topics. I get enough of that in the news. I can’t listen to 44 hours of it for “entertainment”. He seems to only want to make Mississippi look as bad as possible.

DONE

This author was a favorite - now past tense Just another author that feels they need to inflict their personal politics to fiction. He hits every single “box” out there for what one side has said about the other and then some ( for example how the one owns “the tracks that end in ovens” That’s about as vile as it comes and insulting in a historical context. I’m returning it ( I have upwards of 3000 Audible titles. Not everyone is a winner but this is a first for me to do a return for these reasons.) I tried any number of times to power through for about 9 hours thinking he’d stop. Nope - full on rabid. I’m not wasting 2 days of listening struggling with this. Heck it starts within minutes and is unrelenting. My last book by this author and I think I’’ve read all he’s written Scott Brick is of course a 5 star narrator but the writing itself is so tainted in this manner it’s hard not to drag him down too. My apologies there BUT SAVE YOUR MONEY/CREDITS
