Benito Pérez Galdós (1843-1920)
Benito Pérez Galdós nació en Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, el 10 de mayo de 1843, hijo de Sebastián Pérez, teniente coronel del Ejército y de Dolores Galdós. Fue un niño callado, aficionado a la música, el dibujo y la literatura.
Es opinión general que Pérez Galdós es el mayor novelista español después de Cervantes. A los 19 años se traslada a Madrid con el fin de estudiar la carrera de Derecho. Allí conoce a Francisco Giner de los Ríos, fundador de la Institución Libre de Enseñanza, quien le alentó a escribir.
Pérez Galdós fue un observador privilegiado y atento de la realidad, asistía con frecuencia a las tertulias de los cafés, conocía bien las redacciones de los periódicos, con los cuales colaboraba, y mantuvo contactos con la política, defendiendo a los progresistas. Sus lecturas abarcaron obras de autores clásicos, románticos y costumbristas y de los novelistas extranjeros contemporáneos. Entre estos Charles Dickens, al que tradujo al castellano.
En 1970 publica su primera novela, La Fontana de Oro. En los años siguientes comienza a escribir los Episodios Nacionales.
De su vida íntima sabemos que tuvo una hija ilegítima, y amoríos con Emilia Pardo Bazán. Nunca se casó, pero plasmó su tipo ideal de compañera en una mujer ya mayor: Teodosia Gandaria en el drama Pedro Minio. Constantemente predicó un tipo de amor más libre aunque se opuso a las costumbres demasiado licenciosas. Escribió Doña Perfecta en 1876 y fue elegido miembro de la Real Academia Española. En 1892 se entregó a la reforma del teatro nacional. El estreno de Electra supuso un acontecimiento nacional.
Pérez Galdós fue académico de la Real Academia Española desde 1897 y llegó a ser propuesto tres veces para el Premio Nobel de Literatura.
Los últimos años de su vida fueron tristes; estuvieron marcados por la progresiva pérdida de la visión, hasta quedarse completamente ciego. Además, debido a su continua tendencia a endeudarse con prestamistas usureros, murió pobre y sin el reconocimiento que merecía. Falleció en Madrid el 4 de enero de 1920, a los 72 años de edad.
