Publisher's summary

Change is coming to Faha, a small Irish parish unaltered in a 1,000 years.

For one thing, the rain is stopping. Nobody remembers when it started; rain on the western seaboard is a condition of living. But now - just as Father Coffey proclaims the coming of the electricity - the rain clouds are lifting.

Seventeen-year-old Noel Crowe is idling in the unexpected sunshine when Christy makes his first entrance into Faha, bringing secrets he needs to atone for. Though he can't explain it, Noel knows right then: something has changed.

As the people of Faha anticipate the endlessly procrastinated advent of the electricity, and Noel navigates his own coming-of-age and his fallings in and out of love, Christy's past gradually comes to light, casting a new glow on a small world.

Harking back to a simpler time, This Is Happiness is a tender portrait of a community - its idiosyncrasies and traditions, its paradoxes and kindnesses, its failures and triumphs - and a coming-of-age tale like no other.

Luminous and lyrical, yet anchored by roots running deep into the earthy and everyday, it is about the power of stories: their invisible currents that run through all we do, writing and rewriting us, and the transforming light that they throw onto our world.

Like escaping into time itself

I was a bit hesitant in the first few chapters, as the story meandered and I couldn't quite get where it was going. But having faith in the author and just enjoying the beauty of the words and sentences themselves, I found myself more and more captivated by the story. It took me in and brought me to another place, the town of Faha, whose inhabitants and quirks I feel I now know. There is an understated sense of humor here that had me chuckling throughout. And while being puzzled by the seemingly bland title at first, I now see how it perfectly describes the book and what it means to me. Another absolute gem by Niall Williams, supported by a supreme performance from the narrator. Storytelling at its finest.
Give it time, and it will give you happiness.

Loved. Every. Minute.

“This is Happiness” is a warm, enchanting — and familiar — telling of a time and place that Irish-Americans will want to cherish and celebrate. The book is wonderful, and the reading is a delight! Thank you, Niall and Dermot! ☘️

Delightful, colorful reminiscence

Set in post WW2 (but pre-electric) rural Ireland, this story covers several months when the narrator was 17 and the rain stopped. The characters and their many activities are delightfully rendered, and the narrator’s steady cadence and Irish accent add a beautiful texture. I have recommended it to several friends.

Loved it

I enjoyed this book so much. I enjoy any books in Ireland. Williams has such a great way with words and I found myself totally transported. It feels like the kind of book you should have everybody read it will last in your mind for years.

A Lovely Long Irish Story

This is one of my favorite books ever! The brogue, the phrasing, listening was sheer pleasure. I couldn’t love it anymore!!!

Hauntingly Beautiful

Started slow. Be patient. The characters come to life and the sense of place and time are well crafted. The bare and honest reflections of the narrator, tinged with more humor than sadness, touched me deeply.

Brilliant, Profound, Lyrical Story

This is Happiness - a masterpiece on all levels. Author and narrator - a perfect coupling. Feels like this book is one of the greatest stories ever written as 78 year old Noell tells what happened in his Irish Village, Faha, as a 17 year old living with his grandparents prior to electricity reaching their parrish. I laughed, wept, learned. Every word is precious- Niall Williams - absolutely gifted writer imho. I am sorry the book ended. My highest recommendation!!! The only other story to compare: The Book of Ebenezer LaPage. Perhaps, 2 of greatest stories told.

They don’t come better than this!

Lovingly told with a tumble of language and depth of human compassion. I would untangle a perfect passage in my head after it went by wondering how long the author spent finding it, shaping and honing it into a thing of substance so real it stood before me like a living breathing thing.

Beautiful Story

I don’t know how long it has been that I have enjoyed a story so much. Not being Irish or a storyteller I feel I have somehow missed out. I thought the narrator was outstanding. Beautiful, great literature.
