Publisher's summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the bestselling author of The Power of Habit, a fascinating exploration of what makes conversations work—and how we can all learn to be supercommunicators at work and in life

“A winning combination of stories, studies, and guidance that might well transform the worst communicators you know into some of the best.”—Adam Grant, author of Think Again and Hidden Potential

Come inside a jury room as one juror leads a starkly divided room to consensus. Join a young CIA officer as he recruits a reluctant foreign agent. And sit with an accomplished surgeon as he tries, and fails, to convince yet another cancer patient to opt for the less risky course of treatment. In Supercommunicators, Charles Duhigg blends deep research and his trademark storytelling skills to show how we can all learn to identify and leverage the hidden layers that lurk beneath every conversation.

Communication is a superpower and the best communicators understand that whenever we speak, we’re actually participating in one of three conversations: practical (What’s this really about?), emotional (How do we feel?), and social (Who are we?). If you don’t know what kind of conversation you’re having, you’re unlikely to connect.

Supercommunicators know the importance of recognizing—and then matching—each kind of conversation, and how to hear the complex emotions, subtle negotiations, and deeply held beliefs that color so much of what we say and how we listen. Our experiences, our values, our emotional lives—and how we see ourselves, and others—shape every discussion, from who will pick up the kids to how we want to be treated at work. In this book, you will learn why some people are able to make themselves heard, and to hear others, so clearly.

With his storytelling that takes us from the writers’ room of The Big Bang Theory to the couches of leading marriage counselors, Duhigg shows listeners how to recognize these three conversations—and teaches us the tips and skills we need to navigate them more successfully.

In the end, he delivers a simple but powerful lesson: With the right tools, we can connect with anyone.

Editorial Review

Just ask: Do you want to be helped, hugged, or heard?
Charles Duhigg rocked my world eight years ago when I first listened to The Power of Habit. I was just starting out in my career then, and the things I learned about habit from him shaped my working life. In Supercommunicators, Duhigg again does what he does best: He shows you what you already knew but didn’t realize, and then he tells you how to harness those skills. This time, it’s about communication. Something we can all get better at in our divided world. I can see how the lessons I’ve learned here will help me in my career for the next 10 years and beyond. Plus, he narrates it himself this time, so I think his communication comes through all the more clearly. — Audible Editor, Melissa B.

Superficial and didn’t have anything novel

I’m not sure if other people will find this book useful. It’s not that it is wrong, it’s that most of it is obvious or over simplified. There are other books with more depth on the subject such as Influence by Robert Cialdini and Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss.

I didn’t rate it one star because it’s possible this is not obvious to everyone or is something they hadn’t thought about. In which case they might benefit from this book but I personally didn’t find any value in it and I don’t consider myself an expert in communication.

Most of this seems like empathy for dummies.

The Big Lefty Book for Communicating with the Right

This is a big lefty book on communicating with the right. The author takes the lefty stances on every political and social issue and then explains how to pleasantly communicate those issues. It's not a terrible book, but the author definitely show his bias throughout. Its almost like he had a regular book that was edited by a committee of lefties until it was sure not to raise any blue haired eyebrows. Again, not a terrible book, but it is written for a specific audience.

Would've liked it to go deeper

I wish the book would've went more into the nuances of how to ask good questions or determine what a conversation is about (step 1). The book go used mostly on the storytelling of two individuals who were supercommunicators. Would've been interesting to here the author talk about what do when a conversation is short for time or it's a leader to a subordinate who needs a firm, direct conversation.

An Author’s Journey Informs His Work

It begins with what sound like wandering digressions and a reportorial tone, but his learning style justifies his approach. This is not a recipe for success but a list of helpful guide posts gathered from examples. What makes it useful is the author’s extensive efforts to examine situations in which professionals and amateurs sought out ways to overcome obstacles to communication and to identify tactics and strategies that support personal growth and adaptation. I began with a presumption that I was a good listener. I have taught the process. I learned a lot, improved my self-awareness, grew from the experience, and adopted some of his suggestions. Thank you, Charles.

Great insight and easy to listen to!

I love the insight provided through stories. He doesn’t just tell you what to do. Giving storied examples teaches you the hows and whys. His narration is spot on, so pleasant to listen to.

Best book ever

I ended the book, saying, wow it’s over? This should be required reading for every human, everywhere, and if we ever find nonhumans who can read, they can read it to.

We are all social beings.

As I am writing this, I learned that one of my neighbors, who lost his wife of 60 years, shot himself in the his backyard. He had many children and grandchildren. He often rode a golf cart in our subdivision and waived as he rode by. As his neighbor, I had no idea how lonely he was. Now, there are many police cars at his house, picking up his body. I wish I had known how lonely he was. My point is, people near us, and you, are suffering and lonely. Let’s all make extra efforts to engage others in conversation and listen to what they have to say. Everyone needs to be noticed and valued. Many people are going through trials and tribulations that we do not know about. Let us all reach out more to others, and let them know everyone has value and are loved, even by their neighbors.

Being human

I think the world tries really hard to pull us away from our roots of connection, love, empathy, and understanding. A great reminder of how to focus on the basics of human connection.
